Introducing:

THE DATA BUFFET

Key features:

  • Agile population of the data buffet platform, using innovative “data platter” containerisation constructs, which can be placed anywhere on the data buffer “table” to enable real-time access (and if the table runs out of space there is the option to pile platters up)
  • Once consumers are given access, they will experience an all-you-can eat service (unless any of the data platters run out, that is)
  • Piles of data are provided on carefully designed, under-sized platters, which will reliably and consistently spill onto the table and stain the tablecloth (if a tablecloth abstraction layer is chosen, that is: the use of a data fabric is optional here)
  • Free-for-all access to all platters, with plenty of opportunities to mix data flavours that should never go together, dynamically and in real time (the ultimate in self-service choice)
  • Everything in the data buffet architecture is stored the same way, for maximum flexibility and inter-operability (and all at just above normal room temperature, of course – so some things on the data buffet menu will keep well, but look out for data that goes off quickly!)
  • The refreshment of data on each data platter is the responsibility of data platter owners (aka “data waiters”), with flexible standards (a.k.a. no rules) about the quality of the data or the frequency of updates (this is to encourage clear accountability for the data platters. Of course, the waiters work behind the scenes in the data buffet staging area, so there’s no way of finding out who they are, to let them know about problems or to ask for more when the data runs out…)

OK, who thought I was being serious before they read this?!

Unfortunately, some organisations implement “data buffet” design patterns without realising they are doing it. Large scale data buffets can lead to a lot of data stomach upsets…
